UF Religion at AAR/SBL 2019 in San Diego, California

The American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting brings thousands of professors and students, authors, publishers, religious leaders, journalists, and interested laypersons to its Annual Meeting each year. Co-hosted with the Society of Biblical Literature, the Annual Meetings are the largest events of the year in the fields of religious studies and theology. Some 10,000 people attended recent Annual Meetings, enjoying access to more than 1100 academic sessions and additional meetings. This year’s meetings will be held in San Diego, California from November 23-26.


UF Religion
 is proud to have seven faculty and graduate students representing the department through paper presentations, presiding over panels, and leading in other ways at the event. Below is a full list of their presentations and panels with information about when, where, and what events they will be participating in so that you can enjoy their scholarly work!

UF Religion FACULTY

Dr. Michael J. Stahl will present the paper, “Under the Shadow of Elijah: Biblical Historiography and the Reconstruction of Ancient Israelite Religion” as part of the session: Historiography and the Hebrew Bible. This will take place Monday – 1:30pm – 2:00pm in the Convention Center – 31A (Upper Level East).

Dr. Robert Kawashima, as a member of the NRSV Editorial Board, will take part in discussions regarding the update of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible that has been commissioned by the National Council of Churches.

Dr. Vasudha Narayanan will take part in a session on Hinduism as part of Governmental Chaplaincy and Religious Diversity: Toward Best Practices. This will take place on Saturday – 3:00pm – 4:30pm in the Marriott Marquis-Oceanside Room. She will also be responding as part of the Religion in South Asia Unit in the theme Translating Traditions: Discursive Practices in Text and Performance. This will take place on Saturday – 5:30pm – 7:00pm in the Hilton Bayfront-Aqua 303 (Third Floor). She will also be responding as part of the Religion in South Asia Unit in the theme New Directions in the Study of South Asian Religions. This will take place on Sunday – 5:30pm – 7:00pm in the Hilton Bayfront-Sapphire L (Fourth Level).

Dr. Ali Mian will take part in the panel discussion in the Islam, Gender, Women Unit under the theme New Directions in the Field of Islam and Gender. This will take place on Sunday – 9:00am – 11:30am in the Hilton Bayfront-Indigo 204B (Second Level). He will also take part in the panel discussion in the Religion and Disability Studies Unit and Religion, Colonialism, and Postcolonialism Unit under the theme Author-Meets-Critics: Jasbir Puar’s The Right to Maim: Debility, Capacity, Disability. This will take place on Sunday – 1:00pm – 3:00pm in the Convention Center-21 (Upper Level East).

UF RELIGION GRADUATE STUDENTS

Venu Mehta will present the paper, “Sectarian Negotiations among the Jain Religious Diaspora in the USA” as part of the Jain Studies Unit Theme: Jain Diaspora Temple Committees and Praxis on Sunday – 3:30pm – 5:00pm in Hilton Bayfront-Sapphire – 411B (Fourth Level). She will also be presenting the paper, “Making Jaina Tantric Cult of Madmāvatī Public in Gujarat” as part of the Jain Studies Unit Theme: Genesis and Development of Jain Tantra. This will take place Sunday – 5:30pm – 7:00pm in the Hilton Bayfront-Aqua 310A (Third Level).

Jeyoul Choi will present the paper, “Transnationalism and First-Generation Korean-American Evangelical Protestantism: A Case Study” on the Transnational Religious Expression: Between Asia and North America panel. This will take place on Saturday – 9:00am – 11:30am.

Amanda Nichols will be presenting at a session entitled Theorizing Publics with the Religion and Ecology Unit. The presentation is entitled “Hope Spots for our ‘Blue Heart’”. This will take place on Monday – 3:30pm – 5:00pm. She will also be presiding over a session with the Feminist Theory and Religious Reflection unit entitled “Killing the Joy of Reproductive Time”. This will take place on Saturday – 9:00am – 11:30am.
