Academic Advising

The Religion Department provides advice about classes, credits, and other questions for Religion majors and minors.  Many of your general questions about our major and minor are answered on our department webpage.  If you have additional questions or wish to schedule an appointment, our undergraduate coordinator (advisor) is Dr. Erin Prophet.  The best way to contact her during the fall semester is via email, at eprophet@ufl.edu.

For general advising information, including questions about how to add a major or minor, please visit the UF Academic Advising Center website.

FAQs

Q:  I don’t know what courses to take for an upcoming term.  Can you help me figure it out?  And while we’re at it, can we plan the next few semesters?

A:  Yes, the undergraduate advisor can help with this.  Please start by carefully reading our major requirements and noting which requirements you have completed and which you still need to fulfill.  This should help you create a plan for your remaining years at UF.  With this in hand, you can request an appointment with the undergraduate coordinator by emailing eprophet@ufl.edu. In your email, please include the following information:  your expected graduation date and your UFID.

Q: If I am a religion major, can the religion advisor help me with all my advising questions?

A:  No, the religion advisor can only help with questions about the religion major and minor. The Academic Advising Center handles all other issues, including college and university requirements.

Q:  If I take a REL special topics course (e.g. 3938), can it count toward my major requirements, e.g. for Islam or scripture?

A:  Yes, as long as the content of the course is relevant. Once you have completed the class, you can ask the undergraduate coordinator to do a “course exception.”  You will need to provide your UF ID number and also indicate which requirement you wish the class to fulfill.

Q: Can I get credit towards my religion major or minor during study abroad?

A:  Yes, as long as the courses are appropriate. The undergraduate coordinator can help you decide what courses will count and even help you choose among study abroad options.

Q: Can I get credit toward my religion major with transfer courses from another institution?

A:  Yes, as long as the content is relevant.  The undergraduate coordinator can work with you to identify appropriate equivalencies.

Q: Can I do an honors thesis as a religion major?

A:  Yes!  We have some requirements regarding GPA, and you will have to identify an instructor who is willing to work with you on your topic. When you have confirmed your eligibility and have an approved topic and willing advisor, you can sign up for thesis credits by emailing Ms. Anne Newman at annen1@ufl.edu.  You will need to copy your faculty thesis advisor on that email to confirm approval. Most students spend two semesters working on their honors thesis, taking 3 thesis credits each semester.  However, you and your advisor will work out the plan that is most appropriate for you.
